I am an overseas boarder from Spain and I have boarded for one year. I think it is one of the best things I have ever done. I found it really easy to make friends because everyone was so nice – they made me feel as if had always known them.
Even though I was a bit homesick and I didn’t understand most of the lessons, as my English needed practice, all the teachers were really patient and helped me like no other teachers had done before. Soon I started to do really well in my lessons. If you are boarding you can also catch up with lessons if you are struggling and there will always be a member of staff there to help you.
I have enjoyed my year so much I have persuaded my parents to let me stay for another year. Free time here is so amazing as you have so many options: play outside, watch films or music videos, quizzes or just talk to your friends and meet other people. You get so much time to know people far better than if you were just at school during the day.
In free time there is always an activity to do. I have chosen to do extra maths and athletics on Mondays, art on Wednesdays, Schola on Thursdays and hockey or tennis on Fridays. There is also boys’ schola on Wednesdays and Fridays, tennis on Mondays or Zumba on Tuesdays.
Boarding is especially fun at the weekends, when we can do lots of fun activities kindly arrange by our dedicated Houseparents. Recently, we have visited the seaside, gone ice-skating and paint-balling! It’s really good fun and a great way to form close friendships with other boarders. Also, there is always something fun to do on Saturday, or Sunday after Mass, ranging from ‘Compulsory Pilgrimage’ (walk to the Abbey Church, pray, walk back) to hanging off the edge of a cliff going abseiling. Overall, there are always exciting things to do on weekends, which we all have great fun getting involved in!
The best part of boarding for many people is your friends. At school everyone’s different and therefore you will always have something different to talk about. Over time, this is what gives our school it’s enriching family atmosphere – we all feel accepted and enjoy our time here. I think boarding is a marvellous thing.
