Pierre Herrenschmidt and Elliot Millman, both in Year 8 at St Olave’s School, had the idea to row across the Channel to raise money. Using rowing machines, with the correct distance programmed in, they could do it from the safety of the school hall – and avoid getting wet.
Showing great determination and self-reliance, they organised the row themselves, liaising with various people to get permissions, source the machines and organise the rowers – their fellow pupils. After an intense morning of rowing, they raised £664.
We wanted to do something to raise money for York Against Cancer. We liked that the charity is local so we would be helping York residents.
