Anthony Day delivered his talk entitled ‘Seven Billion People Want Everything You’ve Got’ to Sixth Formers at St Peter’s School, York. It focussed on how lifestyle choices and career choices may allow our young generation to hold on to the standard of living they expect, even in the face of global competition for scarcer food, water, energy and materials.
Anthony believes that the coming generation will be the key to prosperity in a crowded world where everyone is striving for more.
As part of the talk, he highlighted the fact that the world population was 2 billion in 1950, but in 64 years has risen to 7.5 billion. He mentioned food security, and that some have projected that eating insects may be the solution to this. He also talked about energy and water scarcity.
There were more positive notes. Anthony talked about the number of opportunities that these challenges may bring, such as careers in green energy and sustainability.
He concluded that the future will be different and challenging, but that today’s young people can make it exciting and rewarding.
