Mark Langley (39), Director of Sport at Terrington Hall School, has completed his second 5k training run in preparation for the London Marathon on Sunday 13 April which he is running in memory of his father-in-law Colin Barrass who died of lung disease in December 2011.
Mark ran Edinburgh’s BUPA Great Winter Run 5k event – in 25min 35sec on 11 January 2014, having completed Newcastle’s BUPA Great North Run 5k event on 15 September 2013 in 24min 09 sec.
As in Newcastle, his wife Louise and two young daughters Emily and Hattie were there to cheer him on, only this time Emily (8) put on her own running shoes and ran the BUPA Junior Great Winter Run, clocking up an impressive 2.5k in 13min 24sec, with her father running alongside.
Conditions were cold and icy in Edinburgh. We weren’t able to run on the roads, only the grass which was very muddy, but once again, the atmosphere was amazing. Emily had seen the children taking part in the fun run in Newcastle and asked to take part in Edinburgh’s.
Illness prevented Mark, who has never competed in a full marathon event, from participating in York’s Plusnet marathon last October.
I was really disappointed to have to pull out the week before the York marathon but it made me even more determined to get into the London marathon. I’m aimingto raise £1750 for the British Lung Foundation. So far, thanks to the generosity of family, friends and work colleagues, I’ve already raised more than £500, but now the fundraising starts in earnest.
The former U19 Yorkshire cricketing batting all-rounder and current member of Hovingham Cricket Club first team admits that he has come to running late in life.
It just goes to show that there’s always time to take up something new. The key is having the motivation to put in the hours training. My personal challenge is to complete the London Marathon in under four hours. It’s all getting rather close now. I have the Adidas Silverstone half marathon in March and then it’s the real thing.
