The Read School was founded in 1667 through a bequest in the will of Sir Charles Read, a local lawyer and philanthropist, and is today a thriving boarding and day school of around 260 pupils, aged 2 – 18, existing to provide an education that is caring, inspiring and fun.
Our pupils are open, friendly and proud of their school. Learning takes place in an atmosphere of cooperation in which each individual is respected and has the chance to succeed in all their endeavours.
We strive to challenge and inspire each individual pupil; stretching and developing their intelligence, creativity, physical prowess, cultural awareness and spiritual insight. The pupils that will gain the most from the experience we offer will be those who wholeheartedly put the most in. Our small class sizes ensure that no-one is overlooked, but importantly, do not diminish our high aspirations. We expect our pupils to be actively involved in all facets of school life and we want them to achieve the very best that they can.
Sport is important at Read as is our rich and varied activity programme, which includes a flourishing Combined Cadet Force and full and active participation in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, with many Sixth Form pupils going on to achieve their Gold Award. This is one of the most important things looked for in university applications and by future employers.
Our boarding houses have recently undergone a period of refurbishment and are warm, friendly and welcoming. Life as a boarder at Read is always busy, hard-working and fun.
Boarding offers stability to young people in a fast-moving and sometimes complex world, while teaching them self-reliance, independence and tolerance of others.
An inspection by ISI in January 2012 found that ‘…the school’s educational provision remains consistently good in its support of the pupils’ academic achievement and personal development’ and our pastoral care was found to be excellent.
